2017 runner up Venus Williams has fallen at the first hurdle of this year’s event.

The number five seed was knocked out in straight sets by Switzerland's Belinda Bencic.

Bencic won 6-3, 7-5 to move into the second round.

It’s is the first time in over 20 years that no Williams sister has featured in the second round of the Australian Open.

It capped off a bad day for American women at the Open, with US Open finalists Sloane Stephens and Coco Vandeweghe also going down.
