Moderate Flood Warning for the Bellinger River

At Thora and Bellingen

Issued at 8:42 am EDT on Saturday 18 March 2017

Flood Warning Number: 3



Up to 193 millimetres of rain has been observed during the past 24 hours to

8:00 am Saturday over the Bellinger River valley. Further heavy rain is

forecast for the next 24 hours.



The Bellinger River at Bellingen exceeded the Minor Flood Level (3.7 metres)

this morning.



At this stage is not possible to predict flood peaks because of uncertainty

over how much more rain will fall.



Bellinger River:

Moderate flooding is predicted along the Bellinger River at Thora and Bellingen.



The Bellinger River at Thora is expected to exceed the minor flood level (3.00

m) Saturday morning. The river level is likely to reach the moderate flood

level (4.30 m) Saturday afternoon.



The Bellinger River at Bellingen may reach the moderate flood level (6.70 m)

Sunday morning.

Initial Minor Flood Warning for the Coffs Creek

At Coffs Harbour

Flood Warning Number: 1



Heavy rain has fallen in the catchment upstream of Coffs Harbour which is

expected to produce minor flooding along Coffs Creek and the Coffs Harbour area.



Coffs Creek:

Minor flooding is predicted along the Coffs Creek.



The Coffs Creek at Coffs Harbour is likely to reach the minor flood level (3.00

m) early Saturday morning.



SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL

For people in the

Mid North Coast and parts of the

Northern Rivers,

Hunter and

Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts.

HEAVY RAIN AND WINDY CONDITIONS NORTH COAST AND ADJACENT RANGES





SYNOPTIC SITUATION:

A slow-moving low pressure system off the far north coast extends a trough to

the Mid North Coast and Hunter districts.





HEAVY RAIN which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected through the Mid North

Coast, southern parts of the Northern Rivers and adjacent ranges today. Rainfall

totals between 100 mm to 200 mm are expected during Saturday. Localised falls

exceeding 250 mm are also possible during Saturday. Several stations in the

Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast have already recorded rainfall totals in

excess of 100mm since 9am Friday.



DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are

possible along the coastal fringe for southern parts of the Northern Rivers and

northern parts of the Mid North Coast, most likely this morning and early

afternoon.



Winds are likely to ease by this evening, and rainfall is expected to ease by

Sunday morning as the low and associated trough weaken.





Locations which may be affected include Yamba, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie,

Taree, Sawtell and Dorrigo.
