It has been reported that former PM Tony Abbott racked up a big travel bill in 2016, funded by the taxpayer dollar.

According to a Nine News report, the bottom line for his 2016 travel is a whopping $120,000 - three times the spending of his three predecessors.

This includes $74,000 on domestic flights, which is almost twice the average of all MPs.

A spokesperson has told News Corp that the spending is related to the federal election campaign and visits to rural Australia.
