Todd Carney has opened up for the first time after leaving the North Queensland Cowboys just as his NRL return was set to be rubber stamped.

Carney has told Channel 9's Danny Weidler, he returned to Sydney to be with his mum who is battling cancer.

Carney was on the verge of returning to the NRL with the Cowboys, after training with the first-grade side and playing for feeder cup the Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup.

Now, the only thing on Carney's mind is helping his "number one supporter."
