Today marks 8 years since Victoria's deadly Black Saturday bushfires.

Despite the Royal Commission into the disaster wrapping up 5 years ago, tough changes recommended to building standards are yet to be implemented.

The new codes include higher building standards for hospitals and school halls to protect against ember attacks and radiant heat in fire prone areas.

However these regulations come as little relief for bushfire affected residents, who are still restricted when it comes to clearing vegetation on their properties. They're calling for more control over the bushland surrounding their homes.

The Victorian Building Authority will issue detailed guidelines next month.
