Farmers across the ditch have warned New Zealanders that the country is set to experience a potato shortage that could last for months.

Wet weather across New Zealand is to blame, with potato production seriously impacted by heavy rainfall in key production areas, such as Auckland and Waikato.

Twenty per cent of the country's annual crop has already been wiped out, leading to fears that a chip shortage may arise.

So much so, customers at grocery stores are reportedly stocking up on crisps.

Several supermarkets have issued warnings, with the potato shortage expected to extend into the new year.

According to 7 News, New Zealand is the ninth-biggest potato exporter in the world, with potatoes making up a significant chunk of their agriculture.
