A roof could be built over the MCG to weatherproof the stadium in a radical revamp proposed by MCC boss Stephen Gough.

Gough has suggested that the technology required to install a lightweight retractable roof is ready.

“I think technology is on our side here and the engineers are working on all sorts of solutions about that,” he told News Corp

“And that would be something the MCC would have to look at. Do we want a covered roof and should it be retractable because we go back to those great sunny days for a big open air stadium?”

Gough also suggested that Richmond’s Punt Road Oval could be used for major events and that the average crowd at footy games could get up to 80,000.
