Pilot Survives Crash and Hikes His Way to Hospital

Plane is a write-off

20 December 2018

A pilot had a lucky escape when his plane crashed just after take-off after failing to maintain altitude.

The 78-year-old male pilot was on a fertiliser run over paddock 5km from Dalby when the accident happened.

The pilot dumped his load of fertiliser before crash-landing the plane near the Bunya Highway.

He sustained only minor injuries and walked away from the scene of the crash to the highway, flagging down a motorist who took him to hospital.

Police said the plane was extensively damaged and was a "write-off”, while praising the pilot's actions for his control of the situation.

Investigations, Toowoomba Workplace Health, and Safety continue to investigate.
