NRL’s Financial Security Paves Way For Second Brisbane Team Sooner Than Expected

The NRL is enjoying a renaissance period at the moment with football returning to our television screens over the weekend to the relief of the nation thanks to largely to the cavalier spirit of ARLC Chairman “Saint” Peter V’Landys.

The former Racing NSW CEO has also seen the game extend its broadcast deal with Channel Nine and Fox Sports putting the financial future of the game in a surprisingly stable position.

Now the next frontier, expansion, appears to be back on the table with the goal of being fast tracked with V’Landys last week declaring that Brisbane was primed for a second team, possibly by 2022.

The race to be the second team in arguable the NRL’s most parochial market has been hotly contest with possibilities emerging from Redcliffe, the Western Corridor/ Ipswich and a relocation of the North Sydney Bears.  However, a standalone bid, the Brisbane Bombers led by CEO Nick Livermore has returned to the headlines as strong candidate for the competition’s 17th license.

Speaking on The Big Breakfast this morning, Livermore explained to Marto, Margaux and Nick Cody that the demand is there for a second team and the game would only benefit for doubling its stake in the city.

“You’re getting more Brisbane fans watching twice a weekend rather than just once” the CEO told listeners.
