Proserpine and Cannonvale were the two most storm affected towns or suburbs in Queensland during the 2016-17 Financial Year. The Mackay region was also the 6th most storm affected region in the state, accounting for 9% of all storm claims made in the State.

The NRMA Insurance data also shows that people are severely underestimating the impact that storms have with less than 1 in 5 (18%) recognising that storms are the biggest threat to their homes, while nearly 1 in 3 (30%) of all QLD residents have not taken any action to prepare their homes for storms.
NRMA Insurance data[1] can reveal:
Nearly half (44%) of all home claims in Queensland in the last financial year were a result of storm damage.
The months of March 2017 (76% of all home claims that month) and December 2016 (60% of all home claims that month) were particularly bad for storm damage in Queensland.
Despite the damage that storms consistently cause in QLD, less than 1 in 5 (18%) residents in the state believe storms are the biggest threat to their property, compared to 52% who rank theft and crime as their number one concern[2].
The five most storm-affected regions in QLD (by ABS regional segmentation) were:
South-East Brisbane – (e.g. Capalaba, Cleveland, Belmont) – 24% of all storm claims
North Brisbane – (e.g. Chermside, Deagon, Boondall) – 17% of all storm claims
Gold Coast – 14% of all storm claims
Western Brisbane – (e.g. Chapel Hill, Fig Tree Pocket, Kenmore) – 14% of all storm claims
Sunshine Coast – 10% of all storm claims
Mackay – 9% of all storm claims
