One of the Melbourne underworld’s most bizarre and mysterious crimes took place in the early 2000s.
Male sex-worker Shane Chartres-Abbott was gunned down on his way to court regarding allegations that he had raped and mutilated a former client, a Thai stripper.
She was brutally injured, with burns, bite marks and severe wounds. Her tongue was also partially amputated.
And she claims that this vicious attack was instigated by Chartres-Abbott – who also happened to be a several-hundred year old vampire.
Walkley Award-winning journalist Adam Shand has sifted through thousands of documents, police reports and court records to create The Trials of The Vampire, a PodcastOne production.
This series provides a fresh look at this riveting tale, complete with interviews from people who have never discussed about the incident.
“It just hit the press like a hurricane in Melbourne in particular, and we never really stopped to ask who Chartres-Abbott really was,” Shand said.
“When I started to research, I kind of thought the rape was a done deal because the image was so clear and so strong – the vampire guy.
“And then I started to look at him and talk to people who’d never been spoken to before and a whole different picture emerged.”
