Murray Darling councils back Basin Amendment

Support for northern Basin communities

8 February 2018

Local government representatives from across the Murray Darling Basin, including Murray Darling Association Region Chair Paul Maytom, have reaffirmed their support for the Basin Plan Amendment which was passed through parliament in November.

It reduces the water recovery target in the Northern Basin from 390 to 320 Gigalitres, but is now subject to a disallowance motion by Senator Sarah Hansen-Young, which will be put to the Senate in the next fortnight.

The Association says the Murray Darling Basin Authority recommended the amendment after extensive consultation with the impacted communities, and balanced consideration of the environmental impacts of the recommended reduction.
