Triple M's Matty Johns has backed former QLD coach Mal Meninga's call to play Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves for Queensland, replacing the injured Johnathan Thurston.

"There's a bit of a redemptive feature to Sam," Meninga told AAP. "We haven't got John in the side now, we haven't got Darius."
