Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Strikes Near New Zealand

New Zealand has experienced a "short, sharp" magnitude 5.8 earthquake

People in parts of the South Island may have felt a slight rumble as the quake struck on Wednesday afternoon.

GeoNet initially had the quake as measuring 4.8M, but after a review said "the quake would not be widely felt".

Earlier, a 6.1 quake was recorded but its since been downgraded.

No tsunami warning has been issued.

This follows a 7.1 magnitude quake in Mexico City that has killed at least 139 people.
