A bushfire in Sawtell on Wednesday night left fire fighters battling a blaze of more than just scrub.
Crews from the NSW Fire and Rescue Sawtell, Coffs Harbour and Kempsey arrived just after 11pm to discover a large amount of rubbish burning, which had spread and engulfed heavy machinery.
Firefighters using breathing apparatus worked through the night to control the blaze.
Locals woke to smoke on Thursday morning around Sawtell and Toormina.
