Queensland footballer Liam Tudor has been sentenced to a year in jail for an on-field kick.

Tudor, who played for the Ipswich Eagles, kicked Redcliffe Tigers opponent Josiah Dantel in the head during a game in August.

The 19-year-old was convicted to a year in jail, and is eligible for parole in two months.

Channel 9 reported the judge at Ipswich Magistrates Court described the attack as “gratuitous and unprovoked”.

Tudor was previously banned by AFL Queensland for 20 years, and banned from the Ipswich Eagles for life.

Shortly after the attack, Dantel told Triple M's Marto, Ed and Robin he didn't want to take the incident any further than the 20-year ban.

"I think he’s copped enough. It’s gone national, global-wide, I think he’s embarrassed enough and I’d like to leave it at that," he said last year.

Dantel said Tudor was apologetic for the attack.
