"Labyrinth" Sequel Confirmed With First Storyline Hint Revealed

Script is ready to go

Someone famous* once said "the economy stinks, bees are dying, movies are pretty much all sequels now" and, you know, it's hard to argue with facts.

But while some sequels have certainly lived up to the hype - Deadpool 2, we're looking at you - it's probably fair to say that, more often than not, we're usually a little let down.

Which is why we're trying not to get too pumped up about the news that not only has a Labyrinth sequel been confirmed, it has a script and is ready to begin filming.

So Fede Alvarez, who signed onto the new project last year, told Fandango, anyway; the director of the Evil Dead remake said he was "very excited" about it, and even hinted as to what we can expect from the storyline.

"I was actually having lunch with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project," Alvarez said. "We're very excited about it.

"It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can't tell you much more about it... but we have a script, and we're very excited about it so we'll see where that goes."

He continued: "Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they're larger than life. But that's one of the projects that I'm very excited about."

But while Alvarez hinted that the follow-up would be a "direct continuation" of Labyrinth, Deadline reports that insiders are likening it to more of a spin-off than a sequel - which means the late David Bowie's character will not be making an appearance.

There's still no concrete timeline as yet on what seems like quite a slow-moving project so we won't hold our breaths on a release date. We'll keep you posted, though.
