An Instagram story from Melbourne player Tom Bugg absolutely blew up yesterday when he singled-out Bulldogs star Jason Johannisen.

After appearing in the selfie alongside teammate Jack Watts, Bugg appeared to be targeted by Bulldogs players at the start of the game which had plenty of feeling in the first half.

Coaches from both sides played down the animosity - as well as Watts himself - and now rivals from other clubs have joined in Bugg's defence.

Taking to Twitter, Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins believes his 'friends in the media' should not criticise Bugg for the cheeky jibe:
