It's International Women's Day and the Far North has plenty to celebrate.

What's on in Cairns today.

7 March 2019

March 8th. The day to celebrate the women in our community and the rest of the world who are making a BIG difference.

Cairns Regional Council has kicked celebrations off this morning, with a special breakfast to announce Cairns woman of the year and young woman of the year.

Councillors Linda Cooper and Cathy Zeiger hosting the breaky to honour those nominated too.

Cr Cooper says it's fantastic to see so many women getting together nice and early and beginning the day with like minded people.

While President of the Cairns Business Women's Club Jules Steer is looking forward to their luncheon at the Cairns Convention Centre.

She says the best thing to see across the Far North is women supporting women.

While Minister for women Kelly O'Dwyer says its fundamental for women not to feel threatened in their homes, work or online.

She's reminding everyone the spotlight on this year's themes- RESPECT and SAFETY.

But today, let's build each other up, let's listen and make sure we're all respecting each other.

Happy International Women's Day!
