It’s official: football is not coming home.
England have been knocked of the World Cup after a 2-1 semi final loss to Croatia in an epic encounter at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
It all looked peachy for the Poms early, when right-back Kieran Trippier put in a sizzling free kick from close range — his first ever goal at international level.
There were some serious scenes in England, with thousands of dollars worth of beer wasted:
England continued to dominate for the first half, missing chances to add to their lead before the break.
Captain Harry Kane was arguably the worst culprit, missing a gilt-edged chance late in the half.
Croatia were a different team after the break, dominating play and looking the better side.
Winger Ivan Perisic levelled scores on the 67th minute after a great cross from defender Sime Vrsaljko.
The game went to extra time after neither side could find a winner in normal time, where Croatia continued their dominance.
England’s keeper Jordan Pickford made a brilliant save in stoppage time of the first half of extra time, appearing to injure Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic in the process.
So naturally it was Mandzukic who scored the winner 12 minutes from time:
England players were shattered at the result.
As a result, Croatia are through to their first ever World Cup final.
They will take on favourites France at 1am Monday morning Australian eastern time, while Belgium play England at midnight on Saturday night in the third placed playoff.
