The state government has kicked off a trial of new high tech, "ruggedized" smartphones for NSW Ambulance paramedics, with hopes they will help address blackspots in communications coverage in rural and regional areas.
Our region hasn't been chosen as a trial site though, despite the paramedics union voicing concerns last year about the reliability of ambulance communications in the Riverina and Murrumbidgee.
The phones are being trialled around Dubbo, Bateau Bay and Bateman's Bay.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard says the state government's $35 million ongoing investment includes new in-vehicle and portable radios, upgrades to regional ultra-high frequency infrastructure, new mobile terminals for vehicles and a new long range digital radio network for isolated regions.
