All-rounder Glenn Maxwell was hoping to playing in the Ashes this summer.

The big hitting Victorian was in the Test side as recently as September this year, but made way for Shaun Marsh at the start of the Ashes.

Despite a massive double century against NSW, he couldn’t force his way into the side when an all-rounder was preferred to Pete Handscomb, with Mitch Marsh being drafted in.

Mitch Marsh went on to smash a brilliant 181, seemingly closing the door on Maxwell getting an Ashes gig this year.

Maxwell showed his class from his couch, sending a congratulatory tweet to Marsh when he crossed the ton:

Classy effort from Maxi!

The Aussies have a stranglehold on the WACA Test at lunch — they’re 7/643 in their first innings, a lead of 240 on England with five sessions to play.
