Glenn Maxwell’s epic Sheffield Shield innings against New South Wales has come to an end on 278 after Steve O’Keefe got one through his defences and bowled him.

Maxwell took NSW to the cleaners at North Sydney Oval after coming in 1/17 in the seventh over.

He took just 318 balls to get the runs, hitting 36 fours and four sixes in a remarkable display of first class batting.

The innings is the seventh highest ever made by a Victorian batsman.

He made the runs against a NSW attack featuring five Australian internationals in Doug Bollinger, Trent Copeland, O’Keefe, Sean Abbott and Moises Henriques.

Maxwell smacked them to all parts of the oval, including this remarkable shot that went for six over cover:

Maxwell’s innings will put significant pressure on Australia’s struggling batting, with the Aussies at 6/202 in the 81st over at the Gabba.

England batted first and put on 302.
