Geelong decided not to match the salary offer Port Adelaide made for restricted free agent Steven Motlop today, meaning Motlop is now a Power player.

Due to Motlop’s age and the contract Port offered him, Geelong were awarded a compensation pick at the end of the first round, meaning the Cats now have pick 19.

The compensation came as a surprise to most footy fans, who felt it was too high.

Triple M’s own Damian Barrett led the chorus of people who couldn’t understand how the AFL came to that pick.

Many were befuddled that Motlop attracted the same compensation pick as Buddy Franklin when he moved from Hawthorn to Sydney:

Some fans feel the AFL is trying to help Geelong land Gary Ablett:

There are people who thought the compo was reasonable however:

Geelong’s first two picks in the draft are now 19 and 22 as they have Carlton’s second-round pick this year.
