Locals have reported receiving fake letters asking them to host a Sri-Lankan family during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

A copy of the letter, obtained by Nine News, shows an A4 typed document claiming to be from Peter Beattie, Commonwealth Games Chairman.

"As a part of our Family host 2018 Program and with a knowledge of your feeling for a Multi Cultural Australia, the Australian Department of Commonwealth Relations has selected you as a participating household in our new "United by the Movement. Share your home" plan," the note read.

"You will be pleased, I am sure, to know we have assigned a typical family group from Sri-Lanka to be guests in your home for a few months before and after the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games."

The letter then goes on to list items that should be purchased to accommodate the family, recipes so their favourite dishes can be prepared, and notice that a mini-bus would be appropriate transport to and from the airport.
