City crews respond to wild weather

Big clean up after weekend rain

27 September 2017

Residents across the City of Albany are being urged to show patience as the City responds to a high volume of call-outs

to flooding, road damage and uprooted trees following wild weather over the past week.

With the sound of chainsaws filling the air in recent days as people clean-up their properties, City reserves teams have

also been kept busy clearing local roads of fallen trees and branches following gale-force winds of up to 139km/h late

last week.

Heavy rain fall over the weekend has further stretched City resources as crews respond across a wide region where

between 100mm to 150mm of rain has been recorded.

While Main Roads has had to close a number of roads across the region, East Bay Road near Betty’s Beach is the only

road the City has closed so far due to extensive wash out.

Mr Woods said many roads in Elleker, Takenup and Wellstead areas were flooded in sections and warned there could

still be roads under water or damaged in outlying areas that had not been reported.

“We urge drivers to show caution and drive to the conditions. Flooded roads can be dangerous and pot holes will need

to dry out sufficiently before they can be repaired,” he said. “We also ask everyone to remain patient as we respond to

and prioritise the dozens and dozens of call-outs we have received.”

Acting Manager City Reserves Jacqui Freeman said reserves teams had been focussed on ensuring roads were clear

after winds brought down trees and branches, but it would take weeks to clean up the debris on roadsides.

“We also encourage anyone who comes across a tree or branch causing a traffic hazard to report it so we can attend

and make sure the road is clear and safe,” she said.

To report a flooded road, or trees and branches on roads, call the City’s depot on 6820 3990. For after-hours reports call
