Cavs And Warriors Made NBA Boring? Nope

Finals 3.0 Are Here

27 November 2018

After blasting away all before them, we're back where we were last year in the NBA.

A third straight Cleveland vs Golden State Finals.

The defending champion Cavaliers enter this contest 12-1.

The Warriors? 12-0.

No team can beat Cleveland and Golden State - besides each other.

But what about the rest of the teams who slugged it out before the seemingly inevitable happened?

There are some who think Kevin Durant's decision to join the Warriors all but obliterated any genuine competition that was left in the NBA.

But NBA Commissioner Adam Silver doesn't think so.

"I think it’s a little unfair to him to blame him for the lack of so-called 'competitive balance' at the moment in the league," Silver told ESPN's Mike & Mike.

"I mean, he could have only impacted one team, had he stayed in Oklahoma City or gone somewhere else, there’s no doubt that team would have been better, but it wouldn’t have changed the fortunes for 27 other teams in the league."

Durant's call might have made another Warriors-Cavs series a 'fait accompli' but Silver dismisses talk it made the regular season a bit of a procession.

"It’s just hard for me to fathom how there becomes this perception that at the moment there are only two teams that are truly competitive in the league," he said.

"I just don’t believe it."

"And I think you’re going to see these things have a way of working themselves out over time."

By time, Silver's talking about the NBA draft which is coming up post-finals.

"I mean, Kawhi Leonard was the 15th pick in the draft, Isaiah Thomas was the 60th pick in the draft, Draymond Green was the 35th pick in the draft."

"And we have a great draft class coming up next year."

The Commissioner's confident just about any team can get stronger through the draft, or free agency, to eventually knock off the Warriors and Cavs.

And as for whether either of the top two teams are building a dynasty...

"... they have a lot of winning to do before I think they should be declared dynasties in the way that the Celtics and Lakers dominated for so many years, or even San Antonio with their five championships or the Bulls with their six championships.”

Game 1 of the NBA Finals begins on Friday at 10.30 am (AEST) in Oakland.
