Police have shot dead a dangerous criminal after a tense 21 hour siege in the Lockyer Valley, north-west of Brisbane.

Officers were forced to shoot at Rick Maddison after he ran from the farm shed he'd been holed up in and fired at police.

He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and died a short time later.

Assistant Commissioner Tony Wright confirmed the 40-year-old's death a short time ago.

"He has been challenged by police, at that time he has fired at police, specialist police have returned fire and the male person has been shot. That male person has been declared deceased at the scene."

The standoff followed the fatal shooting of Toowoomba Senior Constable Brett Forte, who was killed yesterday afternoon while trying to pull over Maddison's car near Gatton.

Maddison allegedly opened fire at Forte, his partner also sustained injuries while trying to escape the bullets, losing control of their patrol car which caused it to roll.
