A man has been fined for crashing his drone into Melbourne's tallest building.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority have fined the man $1000 after he lost sight of his drone in January and it crashed into the top of Eureka Tower.

"Densely populated urban areas like Southbank in Melbourne are not the right places to fly a drone as there is a high risk of crashing into buildings and people," CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said on Saturday.

"Anyone who breaks the drone rules runs the risk of a hefty fine from CASA."

A man from NSW was also fined $900 for flying his drone close to a police helicopter.
