Established in 2014, Make A Scene is a small collective of emerging creative professionals from the Great Southern Region of WA. Passionate about rejuvenating empty spaces and turning them into vibrant, creative retail and gallery spaces for their members to promote and sell their work to locals and visitors, this is Make A Scene’s 11th project in region.
Meleah Farrell, the project’s co-coordinator says “The building owner has been so supportive. He actually sought us out after having seen other Make A Scene’s popup projects and how we have reinvigorated unused spaces”.
After a huge team effort to clean and repaint the space, Make A Scene opened the doors to The York Street Project last Saturday and have been overwhelmed by the response and support by the community.
“We have had more than 500 people through on our opening weekend, cementing for us that people prefer to shop locally and support local business.
We hope that such dynamic space redevelopments will have an ongoing ripple effect across our city, revitalising our main streets by creating clusters and pockets of interesting new things for both our community and tourists to enjoy.” Meleah said.
The York Street Project showcases the work of 16 local artists, with various media ranging from textiles and photography to paintings, artisan soaps, macramé, ceramics, jewelry, glass art and origami. Wares will be available for purchase and many of the artists will be volunteering their time at the space, giving art lovers the chance to learn more about the stories behind the works. The project is open 6 days a week until the 13th January.
