A molotov cocktail has been thrown at crowd members during a soccer match this morning.

During the Champions League group stage match between Greek side AEK Athens and Dutch giants Ajax, tempers flared between the two supporters groups.

There were clashes outside the ground itself, but it was once the fans were inside the AEK Athens stadium was when the drama really started taking place.

Despite being separated by several sections of seating, AEK Athens fans still attempted to injure away fans by hurling flares and a molotov cocktail, yes and actual molotov cocktail, in their direction, narrowly avoiding setting fire to some of the Ajax fans.

Photos from the game also appear to show police officers hitting Ajax fans, many of whom were bloodied, with Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt even running over to the visiting fans at one point, to try and place peacemaker.

The match ended in a 2-0 win for Ajax.
