Allan Border has paid tribute to his good mate and long-time cricket teammate Dean Jones after his sudden passing on Thursday night.

Jones, who died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 59 in India, has been remembered with an outpouring of emotion from teammates, friends and colleagues in the cricket community.

As close as any was Border, who skippered him throughout his Australian career, including during his heroic 210 in searing temperatures in Madras and his 48 against the West Indies on debut, an innings Jones labelled as his best.

Border shared some wonderful stories the two shared at the crease to pay tribute to him - and saved a special thank you to Brett Lee for doing everything he could to try and save him.

"As long as we send him off in style," he told Mick Molloy and Jane Kennedy on Friday afternoon.

"He was a great Victorian, a great Australian and a good mate."
