A giant thunderstorm has stopped the Melbourne v Brisbane AFLW match at Casey Fields in the second quarter.

The rain started pouring toward the end of the first quarter, but when lightning started striking near the ground at the 13 minute mark of the second term the umpires had to pull the players for safety reasons.

The lightning has brought about an early half time, with the main break being taken with three minutes left in the quarter.

The teams will play the remaining three minutes straight after half time before stopping, changing ends, then continuing with the third term.

In horrendous conditions, the Demons are leading the Lions 1.4 (10) to 1.0 (6).
